Tourist highlights in Mainz
The “Gaugasse” street leads straight from Hotel INNdependence to the city center. Half way in you should stop at the Saint Stephan church to take a peek at the beautiful stained glass windows designed by Marc Chagall.
From there your walk takes you to Schillerplatz, a large square featuring a fountain covered with amusing masked figures from the locally popular celebration before Lent, and then on to the “Ludwigstrasse” street leading to the Gutenbergplatz. There on the square, right across from theater, you will pass by a large statue of the famous inventor Gutenberg. Stroll across the Marktplatz, where you might meet local merchants selling their wares on the square, and then on to the Mainz cathedral. Moving on toward the Rhine River, you pass by the Gutenberg Museum, across the small park “Fischtorplatz”, and arrive finally at the Rhine promenade.
